Rea Vaya BRT

REA VAYA JOBURG BUS RAPID TRANSIT STATIONS

Ikemeleng Architects were the lead architect in a consortium of architects for this exciting project that was set to revolutionise Johannesburg’s public transport system in the run up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) features dedicated busways along the medians of the city’s major arterials.

Ikemeleng are currently leading work on the BRT Stations which feature pre-board automated ticketing, rapid boarding and alighting, wheelchair friendly access, and enhanced safety and security. The selected station design is intended to reflect a sense of urbanity that is simultaneously African and uniquely Joburg. This is embodied by human scale, finely grained roofscape, playful and disordered form and colour that is vivid and bright. Phase 1A, linking Thokoza Park in Soweto to Ellis Park via Johannesburg CBD, was completed in August 2009.

Jack Mincer Taxi Facility

INNER CITY COMMUTER LINKS – JACK MINCER TAXI FACILITY

Ikemeleng Architects are working on Phase 5-6 of this JDA Project which included Trader Structures, (completed in February 2017) and the refurbishment of Jack Mincer taxi facility, from a 2 level basement and 2 level Taxi facility, into a single basement and 4 level Taxi Facility, incorporating Taxi Management Offices, Clinic and Retail Space. A Tender for Construction was awarded in 2016, but put on hold pending taxi temporary facilities.

Lenasia Public Transport Node

LENASIA PUBLIC TRANSPORT NODE

Contract Value: R4,5 million

Client: Johannesburg Development Agency

The Lenasia Public Transport Node project for the Johannesburg Development Agency comprises of shelter structures, trader stalls, street furniture and public environment upgrade for an intermodal public transport interchange in Lenasia near Johannesburg.The interchange will also include a Bus Rapid Transit Station in future developments.

Greenside

GREENSIDE PUBLIC ENVIRONMENT

Contract Value: R4.5 million

Client: Johannesburg Development Agency

The focus of the project is a new public space within the suburban business node of Greenside, made possible by reconfiguring the road system to create more space for pedestrians. The public space features a boomerang-shaped roof canopy, providing shelter to trader spaces at one end and a tuk-tuk stop at the other. The project is part of a wider park-and-ride scheme linked to a satellite parking facility at the nearby Pirates Sports Club.
