Client: Johannesburg Development Agency
Ikemeleng Architects were the lead architect in a consortium of architects for this exciting project that was set to revolutionise Johannesburg’s public transport system in the run up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The selected station design is intended to reflect a sense of urbanity that is simultaneously African and uniquely Joburg. This is embodied by human scale, finely grained roofscape, playful and disordered form and colour that is vivid and bright. Phase 1A, linking Thokoza Park in Soweto to Ellis Park via Johannesburg CBD, was completed in August 2009.
